Особенности учебы

Краеугольный камень программ Liberal Arts – индивидуальность обучения. Она достигается главным образом за счет того, что, поступая на один из профилей – основной, обычно его называют major, студент может параллельно окончить еще и другой – дополнительный minor. Поэтому бакалавриат и называется многопрофильным.

Major′ы (майджоры) и minor′ы (майноры) состоят из основных (обязательных для специализации) и вариативных курсов. Их студент может компоновать по своему желанию. На выходе получается составленная самим бакалавром личная программа обучения.

Может показаться, что такая учеба поверхностна и не дает глубокой профессиональной подготовки, но это не так. Для каждого профиля есть определенный минимум соответствующих ФГОС модулей и курсов, которые обязательно надо освоить, чтобы сдать экзамены и получить диплом.

У программ многопрофильного бакалавриата Liberal Arts есть государственная аккредитация, поэтому военнообязанные студенты дневных отделений бюджетной и договорной формы обучения получают отсрочку от призыва в армию.

В целом же модель Liberal Arts предполагает:

академическую мобильность и студентов, и преподавателей (обычно много обменов с партнерскими вузами и стажировок);
междисциплинарный учебный план с основной и дополнительной специализацией;
свободу студента формировать индивидуальную образовательную траекторию, после первого курса выбирая основную предметную специализацию и дополнительные курсы;
развитие не только профессиональных, но общекультурных компетенций;
особое внимание приобретению soft skills;
камерность учебной обстановки – небольшие аудитории, маленькие группы студентов;
интерактивность – занятия в форме диалогов с преподавателями и обратную связь от них, взаимопроверки (рецензирование) творческих работ;
большие объемы самостоятельной работы – чтения, выполнения разного рода творческих заданий, исследований, написания эссе-рефлексий;
поддержку академических инициатив студентов.

Словом, в многопрофильном бакалавриате по принципу «свободные искусства и науки» учат профессиям будущего, которые находятся на стыке, на первый взгляд, несовместимых направлений, и готовят специалистов, умеющих быстро осваивать новое.

Liberal Arts и современность

Современное высшее образование всё больше обращается к концепции Liberal Arts. Человечество сталкивается с серьёзной проблемой: технологии изменяют не только наш мир, но и профессии. Какие-то специальности умирают, искусственный интеллект автоматизирует и заменяет человека, появляются новые профессиональные области — колледжи и университеты просто не знают, каких специалистов готовить.

Учитывая вызовы современного мира, теперь важно передать студентам не глубокие технические навыки, а инструменты, которые позволят им критично и нестандартно мыслить, самостоятельно обучаться и взаимодействовать с другими. С этой задачей отлично справляется модель либерального искусства

Искусственный интеллект в ближайшие годы изменит множество профессий. Только в 2019 году Сбербанк, как сообщают информагентства, сократил 12 400 человек, заменив персонал на программы ИИ.

Льготы для абитуриентов

Абитуриенты всех программ бакалавриата ИОН, набравшие высокие баллы ЕГЭ, могут получить скидки на обучение от 25% до 75%.  Для этого, в Институте общественных наук был разработан и выпущен специальный Приказ. Размер скидки на обучение зависит от суммы баллов ЕГЭ абитуриента. Также, при расчете скидки учитываются баллы за индивидуальные достижения.  

Скидки в 10% и 20% абитуриенты ИОН могут получить на следующих основаниях:

• наличие сертификата за участие в различных мероприятиях Института общественных наук;
• единовременная оплата годового обучения;
• обучение на курсах ЕГЭ при РАНХиГС;
• абитуриент является выпускником Лицея РАНХиГС;
• абитуриент является выпускником школы-партнера РАНХиГС;
• абитуриент является членом многодетной семьи;
• потеря кормильца в текущем году.

Should You Attend a Liberal Arts College?

Liberal arts colleges appeal to many students, but they’re not for everyone. Considering attending an LAC? It could be the right choice for you if:

• You’re looking for a more intimate academic experience and to build relationships with faculty.
• You think you might want to attend graduate school or pursue a career in academia.
• You’re a strong writer.
• Rather than a career-oriented approach, you’d prefer a more theoretical approach to learning.
• You’re not sure about what major you want to declare.
• A quintessential college town appeals to you.
• You’re politically progressive.

If you’re interested in attending an all-female college, consider, too, that a majority of all-women’s colleges are small liberal arts schools, like Barnard, Wellesley College, and Smith College.

On the other hand, an LAC might not be the right choice if:

• You want to study a professionally-oriented major and pursue research as an undergraduate.
• You’re on the shyer side and don’t like to speak up in class.
• You’re not a particularly strong writer.
• An urban environment appeals to you.
• You’re hoping to attend a larger school and experience everything it has to offer, like Greek life and elite athletic programs.
• You’re politically conservative and/or religious.
• You need the flexibility of attending school part-time.
• You have substantial financial constraints.
• A diverse student body is important to you.

Bear in mind, of course, that these characteristics are not 100% true across the board. For example, you’ll find conservative, urban LACs, just as you’ll find liberal, rural research universities. It’s important to carefully research and evaluate each school you’re considering to assess whether it’s the right fit.

Античный мир

Впервые концепция Либерал Артс появилась в Древней Греции

Древнегреческим философам нужен был базис для изучения и обсуждения философских проблем, поэтому они уделяли внимание наукам, которые охватывали естественные, социальные, гуманитарные знания и искусство

Из Древней Греции модель либерального образования перешла в Древний Рим, где эта система обучения стала признаком свободных горожан — особой касты людей, которые не занимались физическим трудом. Знание наук позволяло римлянину участвовать в публичных дебатах, выступать защитником в суде и нести военную службу.

Впервые термин Liberal Arts встречается в трудах Марка Туллия Цицерона.

Просвещённая Европа в Средневековье

В средневековых школах и университетах традиции Liberal Arts развиваются, формируя систему семи свободных искусств. Они в свою очередь разделялись на низшую и высшую ступени:

1. Тривиум — низшая ступень (основные науки), включающая в себя грамматику, риторику и диалектику (логику).
2. Квадривиум — высшая ступень (точные науки), в которую входили арифметика, геометрия, астрономия и музыка.

Почему музыку в Средневековье относили к точным наукам? Потому что учёные-музыканты исследовали законы гармонии музыкальных звуков.

Образованным человеком того времени мог считаться лишь тот, кто прошёл полный курс семи свободных искусств. И лишь в эпоху Возрождения с изменением парадигмы обучения модель Liberal Arts постепенно отходит на второй план, чтобы снова стать востребованной в современных университетах XXI века.

Academic Experience at Liberal Arts Colleges

Classes

Like the general student body, class sizes, too, tend to be smaller than those at larger research universities. That means more discussion-based seminars, as opposed to large lectures, and a greater expectation of class participation — something that may be difficult for shyer students who are less comfortable speaking up in class. (Of course, the frequency of small vs. large classes depends on other factors, like your major.) 

Faculty may very well know all their students’ names, something that’s rarer at larger universities when instructors are teaching thousands of students in some cases. That also means they’re more likely to notice when students are absent from classes — something that may be noted.

Curriculum

The curriculum at LACs is designed to equip students with general knowledge to prepare them to be global citizens. Students are encouraged to explore different subjects and departments, rather than focusing exclusively on their major and requirements. For example, you may well find an economics major taking a sociology or philosophy course, even considering a double major or minor. You’ll find many students exploring multidisciplinary tracks.

Some liberal arts colleges even have open curriculums, where there are no general education requirements. Students only need to fulfill major requirements and take a certain number of courses to graduation. Outside of this, they can study whatever they want. 

Faculty

At research universities, research is a huge part of the faculty role and their ability to achieve tenure. Because LACs aren’t research-focused, the “publish or perish” mentality is far less prevalent among faculty at these institutions. Instead, they are more focused on teaching. You’ll also find fewer courses taught by teaching assistants, rather than the professors themselves.

Students may also find that their instructors are more accessible via office hours and other means. They may also find more opportunities for independent study and one-on-one lab work.

Philosophy

As we’ve discussed the LAC education model emphasizes teaching students how to think, communicate, and problem solve, as opposed to directly preparing them for a specific professional role

That doesn’t mean students aren’t well-equipped to take on the career world. Graduates are well-represented in the upper echelons of consulting, business, law, and academia — they just might take less common paths to get there. For example, students interested in working in finance may study economics or mathematics as opposed to majoring in business or accounting. (Do keep in mind that it may be more difficult to transition into a professional role if you attend a lower-ranked LAC.)

Because the emphasis is on developing a broad range of skills, reading and writing play a central role in the curriculum. Most majors, including the sciences, require extensive reading assignments, and students can expect to receive plenty of feedback on their writing. 

LACs are a good choice for students who aren’t sure of their future career. At these schools, they have the flexibility to explore different fields and change majors. 

Liberal Arts Definition

Liberal arts are commonly misunderstood as “soft” subjects that lack supporting numbers or data. While the liberal arts definition does include humanities and soft sciences, it also encompasses physical sciences and mathematics. The key element in defining liberal arts is the intent to combine practical, concrete information, like data and statistics, with theoretical knowledge, like ethics and philosophy. This kind of learning produces well-rounded students with strong critical thinking and analytical skills, and the ability to adapt and work well in various fields of study.

Though the world’s greatest Greek and Roman thinkers—think Plato, Hippocrates, Aristotle—pioneered the liberal arts more than a millennium ago, contemporary universities include general education requirements that supplement subject-specific course because the purpose of the modern university is to provide a combination of practical and intellectual training.

Liberals arts can be found at a wide range of colleges and universities, though some institutions place a stronger emphasis on the discipline than others. Some institutions filter out the liberal arts completely, focusing instead on career-oriented skill acquisition. Below are the different types of institutions and how they relate to the liberal arts.

• Public and Private Colleges feature a robust curriculum with a handful of general education requirements, including liberal arts and interdisciplinary subjects. For example, business majors may be required to complete courses on ethics, history, or language, which are intended to influence the way they understand their career-oriented courses.
• For-Profit Colleges are privately owned institutions that facilitate career-specific training, usually in culinary arts, healthcare, and business. The focus is entirely on practical training, so liberal arts are not included in the curriculum.
• Community Colleges offer two-year programs that lead to an associate’s degree. They are frequently used as stepping stones toward a bachelor’s degree, so students will complete their general education (and liberal arts) studies before going on to a larger university.
• Vocational/Technical/Trade Colleges are institutions that give students career-specific training in one field, and they do not include liberals arts within the curriculum, similar to for-profit institutions.

Liberal Arts Colleges, as the name suggests, are institutions that focus heavily on providing a strong liberal arts education to all students in all fields. Usually, these are private, four-year colleges that tend to be more expensive than other institutions. Common courses include history, language, mathematics, science, and philosophy.

В целом поступление на программы Liberal Arts проходит так же, как и в обычный бакалавриат: по результатам ЕГЭ или (и) внутренних экзаменов вуза, но есть особенность, которая облегчает жизнь абитуриентам. Либеральное образование предполагает свободу выбора не только учебных модулей и курсов, но и вступительных экзаменов. Такая гибкость объясняется тем, что на первом курсе всех направлений многопрофильного бакалавриата общая программа.

Формально абитуриент поступает на определенное направление. Но первый курс всегда отводится на то, чтобы студент определился с выбором специализации. Если он хочет ее изменить, для этого не будет никаких препятствий. В модели образования Liberal Arts можно подать документы на экономику, а выпуститься с дипломом музыканта или кинокритика.

On-Campus Culture at LACs

Size and Location

Liberal arts colleges are generally significantly smaller than research universities, often with fewer than 3,000 students. Many are situated in suburban or rural towns that are largely defined by the college itself. Williams College, for example, is located in Williamstown, Massachusetts, a rural college town. There are exceptions, of course — Barnard College, an all women’s college partnered with Columbia University, is in New York City.

Because these colleges are often central to the towns in which they’re located, they tend to be closely affiliated with their surrounding communities, usually employing many nearby residents.

Diversity

Sometimes, there is less diversity on these campuses, as opposed to larger universities. Students tend to be wealthier and more liberal, too. This may partly be due to the fact that there are fewer students overall, so even if an LAC is as diverse as a research university counterpart, it may not feel that way.

This is not necessarily true across the board, particularly at top-tier, elite LACs. Vassar College, for example, reports that its Class of 2023 is 35.9% people of color, on par with many larger universities. At Amherst College, 45% of American students identify as people of color.

Personality

Many LACs are known for liberal politics, student activism, art, and a large LGBTQ+ community, including Vassar, Sarah Lawrence, and Reed College. Others, however, are a bit more conservative. Bucknell University, Davidson College, and Colgate University are some of the colleges that have a larger percentage of students identifying as right-leaning, although not as much so as some larger research universities.

Most LACs tend to be more liberal overall than the United States as a whole. Many are even more liberal than their states or communities, like Oberlin College in Ohio and Grinnell in Iowa.

Class Bonding

Because these schools tend to be community-driven, the focus is on shared experiences. For the most part, all students live on campus in the same dorms. They learn from the same professors, participate in the same traditions, and share meals together. For students who attended small high schools, particularly boarding schools, this may feel familiar, especially since the student bodies at LACs are so small and not as diverse.

What Is a Liberal Arts College?

Liberal arts colleges are predominantly focused on undergraduate education. While they may have graduate programs, the emphasis is less on these degrees or research than at large universities. 

Rather than professionally-oriented majors and programs, the curricula tend to provide a broader grounding in the liberal arts. (We’ll go into greater detail on what that means below.) The schools are typically on the smaller side, too, in terms of both individual class sizes and graduating classes.

The Liberal Arts Curriculum

Liberal arts schools adhere to the idea that what you study doesn’t necessarily equate to what you do after graduation. Therefore, their intention is not to prepare students for direct entry into the job market. This is a contrast with research universities. Moreover, because these schools aren’t as research-focused, the faculty can be more student- and teaching-focused.

These institutions prepare students for their lives beyond the academic sphere. They learn how to think about complex issues critically, be global citizens and contributors to their communities, and more. They expect their graduates to receive and benefit from a well-rounded education, through studying areas like:

• HumanitiesExamples: English, literature, and history
• ArtsExamples: Music, drawing, and drama
• SciencesExamples: Biology, chemistry, physics, and math
• Social SciencesExamples: Economics and political science

Когда я должен определиться со своей специальностью?

Хотя у вас и есть возможность начать изучать определенную специальность в свой первый год, многие студенты откладывают принятие решения до второго курса, посвящая некоторое время тому, чтобы получше изучить свои предпочтения и узнать о своих способностях. Программа обучения, основанная на получении общих знаний, даст вам необходимую базу  для ваших последующих лет в АУБГ. После того, как вы попробуете различные области и определитесь с тем, что вы хотите изучать в дальнейшем, ваши шансы на успех увеличиваются многократно

Также важно помнить о том, что у вас будет возможность поменять свою специальность во время обучения

Дипломы бакалавриата «Свободные искусства и науки»

Необычная программа предполагает и нетривиальный диплом после ее окончания. Это не значит, что с документами об образовании по модели Liberal Arts не все в порядке. Скорее, наоборот: все в двойном или даже тройном порядке.

• РАНХиГС – выпускники многопрофильного бакалавриата получают дипломы Президентской академии государственного образца. В зависимости от программы они могут дополняться сертификатами об изучении факультативного профиля или дипломами вузов-партнеров (двойные или даже тройные дипломы – на программах британского трека).
• СПбГУ – независимо от предметной области для всех выпускников двойные дипломы: Санкт-Петербургского университета (квалификация «бакалавр») и Bard College (международная квалификация Bachelor of Arts).
• САФУ – государственный диплом бакалавра с указанием дополнительного профиля.
• ТюмГУ – бакалаврский диплом государственного образца по одному из семи профилей, выбранных в конце второго года учебы.

Дипломы факультета или программ Liberal Arts подтверждают подготовку широко эрудированных специалистов, готовых выполнять самый широкий круг профессиональных задач.

Liberal Arts Education Benefits

Pursuing a degree in the liberal arts helps you succeed in a fast-paced world that requires individuals to develop creative solutions today to solve the complex challenges of the future.

Although they’re well-equipped for many different roles, liberal arts majors may have a less clear-cut road to the perfect job than some graduates. Ranstrom had several suggestions for liberal arts majors entering the job market.

• Diversify Your Skill Set – Research done by Payscale has shown that business and computer science majors tend to make more in the initial phase of their careers due to their technical skills, but that liberal arts majors catch up and can surpass some of their counterparts over the course of their careers. Obtaining some technical skills can allow liberal arts graduates to help close that gap in the earlier years of their careers.
• Build Your Personal Brand – Liberal arts students are adept at storytelling and communicating complex ideas. When it’s time to enter the job market they need to harness those skills to tell their own story. Establishing a personal brand is important. Ranstrom offered an example: «A graduate with a history degree applying for a Fortune 500 company may not immediately make as much sense to a hiring manager as a business or accounting major, but that does not mean that there isn’t value in what the history major can provide. It’s about creating a personal branding website, portfolio and cover letter that connects the dots for the hiring manager and showcases not only the history major’s strengths, but also his or her commitment and excitement to the organization’s mission.»
• Think Outside the Box – Ranstrom said that liberal arts majors should be flexible and creative as they start to explore the job market. «If they think too narrowly about the application of their degree in the workforce, they will see lower pay and higher competition (i.e. the English major trying to break into publishing); however, if they are willing to explore different industries and organizations, acquiring skills, contacts, and experiences along the way, they will find a way to merge all of their areas of interests and strengths in a more compelling and fulfilling career,» Ranstrom said. Adaptability and an open mind will serve liberal arts majors well in the job market.

The “Prototypical” LAC Student

Like at most colleges and universities, there is no one type of student who attends a liberal arts college. However, generally speaking, most LAC students are less focused on immediate professional outcomes like immediately becoming an engineer or financial manager. Instead, many plan to go to graduate school or teach.

While students will further develop theoretical and abstract skills while attending college, many already have a solid foundation for them going in. They are also passionate about their major or concentration, not just as preparation for their career but also as an intellectual pursuit. Even if they’re not studying a humanities discipline, they should have strong writing abilities since writing is typically a core part of LAC curricula.

In terms of beliefs, many LAC students tend to be politically progressive — although you may well find a spectrum of views, depending on the college.

Those who opt for the broad Liberal Arts degree, rather than choosing an area of concentration, may wish to look for jobs with training opportunities.
